Analyst Gartner has recommended key cost-cutting tactics
indata managementand integration to
helpprepare firms for an economic
downturn.
Last month,
the analyst advised organisations not to wait for an official
declaration that a recession had begun before making IT
cuts.
Data management affords numerous opportunities for reducing and
controlling costs, according to Gartner.
Gartner has identified nine key areas where CIOs can
significantly reduce costs during 2008.
These are:
Database consolidation through consolidation of redundant
databases and database workloads.
Optimise data integration tools licensing through
consolidation.
Leverage established data structures and
data integration processes and development through re-use.
Perform data mart consolidation - consolidating siloed data
marts into a single data warehouse or into a smaller set of marts
delivers the same types of benefits as operational database
consolidation.
Enforce standards to foster re-use and business agility.
Defer replacement of custom-coded architectures.
Explore open source licensing.
Renegotiate services contracts.
Defer low-priority/limited benefit projects.
