The government is considering installing X-ray cameras
on lampposts that can see through clothes to help spot armed
terrorists and criminals.
According to a leaked memo seen by
The Sun newspaper, "detection of weapons and
explosives will become easier" if the scheme is adopted.
The document was produced by Home Office officials, who, in the
document, acknowledge the scheme would be controversial.
"The social acceptability of routine intrusive detection
measures and the operational response required in the event of an
alarm are likely to be limiting factors," officials say in the
document.
The memo is dated 17 January, and was drawn up for the prime
minister's working group on security, crime and justice, said The
Sun.
The Home Office has refused to comment on the
leaked document.
