Cloud Foundry cloud forecast for 2019
Developers will want to know what’s next with cloud for 2019, obviously.
Key among concerns will be the need to engineer new automation services driven by AI — and (no prizes for guessing), 2019 will continue to be a year of cloud consolidation as companies coalesce, collude and combine.
Abby Kearns is executive director of Cloud Foundry and Chip Childers is CTO, the organisation is an open source, multi-cloud application Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS).
Kearns and Childers have jointly allowed their names to be attributed to an end of year marketing missive that attempts to summarise some of what will happen in cloud throughout 2019.
The pair ‘state’ that multi-platform cloud will be the new normal.
They say that a majority of the market believes containers must be the solution to digital transformation, but in 2019, they’ll realise they’re just a tool — not a silver bullet.
Also on topic for the millennial vote, Kearns and Childers ‘think’ that firms will see that people and process are more important than technology.
According to a press statement from the firm, “Technology is evolving at the same rate as training, so most people with today’s desired skill sets are already employed. Organisations that build continuous learning cycles into their business model and upskill their employees will keep themselves ahead of the curve.”
More interesting perhaps is their now on Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) adoption.
FaaS allows cloud-focused programmers to develop, run, and manage application functionalities without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app — building an application following this model is one way of achieving a ‘serverless’ architecture, and is typically used when building microservices applications.
“FaaS is a serverless technology. It’s already been adopted rapidly as ‘glue code’, which will continue. However, its function as a productive way to build business applications is only beginning to take off. We will see the beginnings of an explosion of developer frameworks built on top of serverless systems. This type of tooling makes it easier to work with and build things with FaaS, so it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle,” state Kearns and Childers.
The pair also tell us to keep our eyes to the east. Together, they have been to China seven separate times this year and they say they are astonished at the pace of technological advancement there.
