VMware, which sells solutions that allow computers to run multiple operating systems, is to introduce a subscription service to allow developers to use its technology more cheaply.

VMware, which is a subsidiary of EMC, is launching the VMware Technology Network, a web-based initiative that will allow developers to download a variety of VMware and EMC systems for a single annual subscription.

The “all you can eat” subscription service is only available for developers, and companies wanting the various solutions for commercial production will have to buy individual licenses for the products.

VMware solutions compete with the likes of Microsoft’s Virtual PC and Virtual Server products. There is also the open source Xen project, which is now gathering wide support.

Full details of the subscription service are expected to be available later this week.
