Ctera 5.0 adds Hyper-V, OpenStack and more to cloud sync and share

Ctera adds more than 100 upgrades to Portal product, and now runs in Hyper-V and OpenStack environments

Hybrid cloud storage file-share and collaboration tool provider Ctera has launched version 5.0 of its product. Key upgrades are a revamp of the user interface (UI), as well as adding Microsoft Hyper-V and OpenStack platform support to existing VMware hypervisor compatibility.

The version 5.0 launch brings around 100 changes and additions to Ctera. Among these are changes to the UI, including features such as a recycle bin and drag-and-drop; Windows phone support added to existing iOS and Android support; the addition of Microsoft Azure and IBM SoftLayer cloud storage to existing Amazon Web Services support; plus numerous administration and security enhancements.

Ctera is based around the Ctera Portal and provides a single interface that allows users to share files, sync and collaborate on fixed and mobile devices using on-premise and public cloud storage.

The product runs as a virtual appliance in the hypervisor and has application programming interface linkages to on-premise back-end and cloud storage, with object storage favoured by Ctera. Endpoint devices are then connected to Ctera Portal servers via agents that enable file share and sync across a system administered by the Ctera UI.

Ctera effectively exploits the current limitations and opportunities available to provide a hybrid cloud-based service. Cloud storage is not currently ready for enterprise storage for the highest performing classes, such as very fast access transactional data and many virtualisation use cases, primarily because of bandwidth issues or at least the ability to guarantee it over public networks.  

But the cloud can be exploited for data with less stringent access requirements such as file data, especially when local storage can potentially provide quicker access in some cases.
