Nick Gaines, formerly the chief information officer at Volkswagen UK, has left the car firm after four years of service.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Gaines took up the role of managing director at Ultra Electronics Nuclear Control Systems last month. The company provides products and services to the defence, security and aerospace industries worldwide.

Gaines is a nuclear engineer, who fell into IT after a spell in the financial services sector. He then worked as head of IT for an accountancy firm and also ran large infrastructure projects for the British Airports Authority (BAA) before joining Volkswagen in 2008.

During his time at Volkswagen, Gaines led a major technology-enabled transformation programme covering 25,000 users across its entire UK network and totally reversing the fortunes of the company's IT.

Volkswagen did not respond to calls for comment on Gaines' departure.
