Dell probes laptop blast

Dell is investigating why one of its laptops exploded at a conference in Japan. Pictures showing flames bursting from the laptop were posted on the web.

Dell said it would be "inappropriate to speculate" aboutthe cause while the investigation was in progress. It added that it was "committed to product quality and safety" and required products to undergo independent safety tests and meet Dell's own safety standards.

In December, Dell recalled 22,000 laptop computer batteries, because of fire risks from overheating.
