CA to buy foothold in e-mail archiving market

Antony Savvas

Computer Associates is to buy iLumin Software Services to give it a stake in the fast-growing market for archiving e-mails and instant messages.

Tighter regulatory compliance needs are driving the message archiving market, with small players such as iLumin competing against the likes of IBM and EMC.

Analyst Gartner estimates the e-mail archiving market will jump ten-fold by 2009 to be worth $885m (£520m).

ILumin recently launched a new module for its main Assentor software, adding the capability for firms to manage files across several different operating systems.

The module allows files to be grouped according to type, how often they are used and other policies. They can then be stored on suitable media according to regulatory and business needs – such as hard discs for immediate access or tapes for less mission-critical data.

The iLumin products will be added to CA’s BrightStor suite of storage management tools. The acquisition price of the company has not been disclosed.
