Weekly compilation of storage news:3PAR adds tiered storage tool
3PAR announced a new version of 3PAR System Reporter, a web-based
historical performance and capacity management reporting tool for
its InServ Storage Server high-end
disc array. The new features include threshold-based email
notification for managing service level agreements (SLA) and new
views into
tiered storage environments. The new views will show physical
and logical capacity utilisation and availability on the InServ
array currently, historically and by tier, including trends by
configuration policy (i.e., Raid level). The new features are
available immediately, free for existing users with software
support as part of their subscription service and at a price of
$6,000 for new customers.
Cisco integrates data center automation with VMware
Cisco announced the integration of Cisco VFrame Data Centre with
VMware Virtual Infrastructure. The VFrame product addresses other
areas of the datacentre, including servers and networking, but on
the storage front, Cisco claims that VFrame can now automatically
configure the
storage area network (San) back-end for VMware deployments,
including the San fabrics and the shared LUuns, based on design
templates that are predefined by the storage and networking
teams.
Dell folds Seagate encryption drive into notebooks
Dell announced that its Latitude D630 and D830 notebooks will now
incorporate Seagate's recently announced Momentus FDE encrypted
laptop drives. Dell has also bundled in management software from
Wave Systems, which will allow users to manage encrypted drives,
set up and recover passwords, and perform preboot authentication.
The product is available now.
Overland adds compression to VTL
Overland announced the REO 4500c, the latest member of its REO VTL
product line that includes hardware compression, boosting the max
capacity from 27 terabytes (TB) to 45Tbyte. The product is
available now for a starting manufacturer's suggestion retail price
(MSRP) of $36,155.
ASP deploys DataCore
DataCore announced that legal application service provider (ASP)
Lawyer Links has deployed DataCore's Sanmelody storage
virtualisation software. Sanmelody is running on both the company's
production SAN and, in an entry-level version, on a backup San
connected via Ethernet. According to the company, the ability to
download DataCore's software for free trial was key to its
selection.
Isilon announces Sony win, Kodak OEM deal
Isilon announced that Sony Music Network, Sony Online
Entertainment, Sony Pictures Digital Authoring Center and Sony
Pictures Imageworks are among multiple Sony business units that
have deployed its clustered storage systems. Sony Music Network
deployed Isilon IQ for its Sony Music Online Japan website; Sony
Online Entertainment uses Isilon for storage attached to its
patch-delivery system, a cross-country network of servers used to
deliver game updates and code corrections to customers; Sony
Pictures Digital Authoring Center uses it to support Blu-ray disc
creation and delivery operations; Sony Pictures Imageworks has the
system in its film scanning and recording pipelines, video creation
and particle simulation applications.
In a separate release, Isilon announced that it has entered into
an OEM agreement that will see Kodak offer a co-branded version of
the Isilon storage system to commercial printers and printing
services.
Westinghouse picks EMC for Exchange storage
EMC announced that Westinghouse chose EMC's products to consolidate
its Microsoft Exchange servers. The company's new email storage
infrastructure consists of two EMC Clariion arrays with Replication
Manager and SnapView software, as well as EMC's Centera
content-addressed storage (CAS) system for email archiving.
Westinghouse is also using EMC Centera CAS to support its active
email archiving strategy.
Swiss reinsurance company migrates Exchange with
NetApp
Network Appliance (NetApp) announced it has expanded its
relationship with Converium, a Swiss reinsurer, which used its
SnapManager for Exchange to migrate its email storage from Lotus
Notes to Microsoft Exchange 2007. The company is also mirroring
snapshots of its email data store between its Zurich, Switzerland,
and Cologne, Germany, offices.
Marine engineering firm picks GFI MailArchiver
Quantum Marine Engineering, a Florida-based company that
manufactures hydraulic equipment for large yachts, has deployed GFI
MailArchiver for email archiving in response to e-discovery
pressures and a desire to cut down on mailbox size for its mobile
workforce.
New data archiver arrives on the block
A new email archiving startup, SoleraTec, has come out of stealth
to announce its archiving software for Windows, Macintosh, Linux
and mixed platforms. The product, called Phoenix, ingests inactive
information from primary storage devices into a secondary storage
information repository tier, and includes search and management
tools for e-discovery.
Quantum announces entry-level tape library
Quantum announced the new Scalar 50, an entry-level tape library
and the latest in Quantum's tape automation product line, which
also includes the Scalar i2000 and Scalar i500 libraries. The
Scalar 50 scales from 38 slot to 76 slots with the addition of an
expansion module and includes Quantum's StorageCare Vision data
management and reporting software.
DNF launches SAS arrays
Dynamic Network Factory (DNF) introduced the SASmaster series, a
new line of SAS-to-SAS and Sata-to-SAS Raid arrays. The SASmaster
product line includes three models, including the SASmaster 12sz,
the SASmaster 16sz and the SASmaster 16sz-HA. The SASmaster 12sz
supports 12 hot-swappable drives, while the other two models
support 16 hot-swappable drives each. Each model supports up to
three expansion arrays for capacities of up to 64Tbyte and
battery-backed cache ranging from 256 MB to 2 GB. The arrays are
priced from $10,000 to $41,000, and expansion arrays start at
$8,000. DNF has also announced that it has added 1Tbyte Sata drive
support to its Enterprise F12-HA Raid subsystems and added
SAS-to-Fibre Channel connections to its existing arrays.
Sans Digital announces SATA expansion arrays
Sans Digital introduced a new TowerRAID product line that includes
the TR4M Sata to JBOD enclosure and the TR4U Sata to USB 2.0
JBOD/Spanning enclosure. Both models support Linux, Windows
2000/2003, Windows XP and Windows Vista, and Mac OS X, and are
available now. Pricing was not announced.
Digitiliti regroups
Following a byzantine financial transaction that saw Digitiliti
acquire its own parent company, Storage Elements, the company has
officially relaunched itself as a managed storage service provider.
Storage Elements was first launched in 2003 as a software developer
and hardware integrator.
Suppliers announce support for the week's new
products
On the heels of announcements of new midrange arrays from Hitachi
Data Systems (HDS) and NetApp on Monday, the companies' OEMs have
announced new rebranded versions of the same products.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) is calling its version of the new USP-VM the
XP20000, and IBM is calling the new NetApp FAS2020 and FAS2050
arrays the N3300 and N3600, respectively. Finally, following on
HP's announcement of a new BladeSystem enclosure, Emulex announced
that its LightPulse host bus adapters (HBA) will support the
enclosure's connection to external storage.
