The UK receives 20 billion spam messages every day according to a report from IronPort Systems' Internet Security Trends Report 2008.
The report also showed that some 120 billion spam messages are sent globally each day, making up 98% of all traffic.
This year, social networking sites will be targeted by spammers to gain personal information about internet users.
IronPort said spam is now a £100bn business and attacks are more measured than in the past
"2007 marks a turning point for threats in the UK. Just when malware design seemed to have reached a plateau, new attack techniques have emerged, some so complex - and obviously not the work of amateurs - they could have only been designed by means of sophisticated research and development," said IronPort European product manager Jason Steer.
"For a time, security controls designed to manage malware were working. But, as a result of this success, the threats they protected against were forced to change," he said.
