The US governement has warned US financial services firms that they may be targeted by al-Qaeda cyber attacks from today.

A website linked to the terrorist network has called for denial of service attacks aimed at financial firms throughout December.

The US Department of Homeland Security said it has no hard evidence that attacks are in the offing, but the US Computer Emergency Response Team is said to have issued a warning to financial companies.

Those threatening the attacks say any cyber attacks would be in response to the continued imprisonment of uncharged terrorist suspects at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba, by the US.

No specific threats were made to the UK financial services industry on the jihadist website.
