Domain-name registrar Network Solutions suffered its second outage in a matter of days yesterday, meaning thousands of companies could not manage their websites.
Late last month Network Solutions suffered a concerted denial of service attack, which took out its DNS (Domain Name System) servers, leaving customer websites inaccessible.
DNS servers translate domain text names (such as computerweekly.com) entered by surfers into numerical IP numbers, to enable connections to sites.
Network Solutions said the latest two-hour outage to its website was caused by a problem at its ISP Savvis, which is said to have suffered a global outage.
It is not clear at this stage how many other Savvis customers are affected by this problem, which is understood to be related to a technical hitch at one of its US data centres.
Savvis has not commented on the technical problem. Network Solutions said its service is now back to normal.
