There was an 86.2% increase in the number of internet users with broadband connections between January 2004 and January 2005, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The government's official statistics agency said figures based on data from internet service providers revealed that broadband now accounted for 41% of all internet connections, up from 22.5% a year ago.

This figure includes Digital Subscriber Line, cable and leased-line technologies.

Overall, there was a 2% annual increase in the number of active subscriptions to the internet, said the Office for National Statistics.
