Sun Microsystems has signed a deal with United India Insurance (UIIC) to equip 10,000 users at the Indian insurance provider with its StarOffice 7 desktop applications suite.

UIIC will deploy the software to users at 1,126 offices across India during the first quarter. Sun is working with one of its Indian partners, systems integrator Accel ICIM Systems & Services, to complete the deployment.

UIIC selected StarOffice 7, partly because of its low cost. StarOffice 7 Enterprise Edition is priced at $25 per user for 10,000 users.

The insurance group is the latest in a string of large Indian companies which have opted for StarOffice, Sun said. Call centre operator ICICI OneSource, National Fertilisers and Apnaloan.com India have also deployed the application suite.
