Lucent Technologies has successfully demonstrated roaming between a wireless LAN (WLAN) and a third-generation mobile broadband network. The telecoms manufacturer performed a seamless handover of a wireless data call from a WLAN to a 3G network.

The company has also executed a seamless handoff between a WLAN and CDMA2000 (Code Division Multiple Access) network, it said.

With such roaming capability, users will be able to browse the Internet while moving between two different types of networks with no interruption in the session.

For the WLAN-3G test, Lucent used its own 3G network and a notebook PC equipped with a 3G test phone, a 802.11 WLAN card from Proxim and roaming gateway software from ipUnplugged AB.

Numerous 3G operators in Europe and Asia plan to offer business customers higher-speed WLAN services in select areas, such as hotels and airports, and 3G service in metropolitan areas.
