Hewlett-Packard has created a new group within its HP Services unit to handle internal IT problems and implementations as well as advising external clients.

The Managed Services Design and Delivery Group will resolve inconsistencies between HP and Compaq's internal IT strategies and will report to both chief information officer Bob Napier and Uli Holdenreid, an executive with HP's managed services.

One of the challenges faced by HP as a result of its merger with Compaq was a difference in the way the separate organisations handled IT decisions. HP's services unit made the strategic decisions for its own internal IT policies while its IT department was responsible for implementing those decisions. At Compaq, however, the IT department handled both IT strategy and strategy implementation

A spokesperson for HP said that under the merged company, both Napier and Holdenreid will influence the direction of HP's internal technology decisions. HP will be able to serve its internal and external customers in a "transparent" manner, equally fulfilling the needs of each group without comprising service, she said.
