United Biscuits has outsourced support and development of applications to Atos Origin in an £8.3m, five-year deal.

The deal follows an £8m SAP contract struck between the two companies in September 2001, and is expected to net United Biscuits a £1m return on investment over the life of the contract.

The outsourcing deal underpins a project to push out common business processes across 20 to 30 UK and European sites over the next 12 to 15 months.

Atos Origin now handles the day-to-day running of United Biscuits' core applications which control supply and demand, workflow, payroll, warehouse management, logistics and sales.

These include SAP R/3 with associated portal and business intelligence systems, closely linked to the company's Manugistics and Lotus Notes software.

United Biscuits' information services director, Mark Vickery, said, "A primary goal of outsourcing was to simplify staffing issues. The outsourcer is better equipped to absorb such changes than we are."

United Biscuits will transfer 36 staff to Atos Origin.
