Windows Home Server offers low-end NAS
Microsoft has released the latest version of its Home Server software, available as low-end NAS by HP and Iomega; SunGard acquires Vericenter.
Windows Home Server targets SMB NAS
Microsoft announced on Wednesday that its Windows Home Server software has been finalized and released to manufacturers, the final step before general availability of new products from products Hewlett-Packard (HP), Gateway, LaCie and Iomega.
HP plans to base a new MediaSmart network attached storage (NAS) box for small office/home office (SOHO) and prosumers on the Windows software, which will include up to 6 terabytes (TB) of storage internally, as well as up to four USB 2.0 ports for external expansion and an automated backup
SunGard boosts collocation facilities with VeriCenter
Disaster recovery managed services and collocation provider SunGard announced this week that it will acquire VeriCenter for an undisclosed amount. Much of VeriCenter's business is based around managed hosting and applications, but according to Mark Hughes, SunGard's executive vice president for availability services, VeriCenter is also bringing in storage customers, as well as new sites for collocation and disaster recovery services. According to Hughes, adding VeriCenter's data centers to its network means that in cities like Boston, for example, SunGard can now offer both a downtown and suburban location for disaster recovery facilities.
Cambridge University deploys Reldata gateway
Reldata announced that the University of Cambridge, Geography Department, will be using its 9000 series multiprotocol gateway. According to a press release, the university has started by using the device to consolidate new and existing storage into a single iSCSI pool served by an existing Linux file server. For the future, the university plans to remove load from the file server by provisioning file storage directly using the gateway's NAS functions. The gateway also provides both block- and file-level snapshots and block-level replication.
Arsenal adds VMware backup
Hosted storage and backup service provider Arsenal Digital announced new virtual server capabilities for its ViaRemote service. The capability handles both file- and block-level data for virtual server environments and also includes data deduplication. To backup data within individual virtual machines, an agent must be installed in every virtual machine that needs to back up data. Once configured, the individual ViaRemote agents deduplicate data and automatically backup changed blocks securely to an Arsenal data center.
HDS to resell QLogic directors
QLogic announced that its SANbox 9000 Series Fibre Channel director switches are now available from Hitachi Data Systems (HDS). HDS also resells the SANbox 1400 and 5600 series from QLogic, as well as QLogic host bus adapters.
Bus-Tech boosts performance on mainframe VTL
Bus-Tech announced the release of version 5.0 of its software for both the Mainframe Data Library (MDL) and the Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) tape-on-disk controllers for IBM and compatible mainframes. The MDL and the MAS are tape-on-disk controllers that attach directly to the mainframe via FICON or ESCON I/O channels and use standard Gigabit Ethernet to attach to open systems storage version 5.0 with throughput of up to 600 megabytes per second (MBps), representing a 50% improvement over previous versions, the company claims.
Yosemite backup software supports LTO-4
Yosemite announced that its Yosemite Backup 8.5 software will support hardware encryption offered by the LTO-4 format. The software allows users to choose LTO-4 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) hardware or 128/256-bit AES software encryption and compression.
Symantec certifies Oracle
Oracle and Symantec today announced that Symantec's Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0, Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle 5.0, Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System 5.0, Veritas Cluster Server 5.0, Veritas NetBackup 6.0 Client and Veritas i3 are now certified interoperable with Oracle Enterprise Linux.
Atto certified with EMC Retrospect
Atto Technology announced that its iPBridge 2600 and iPBridge 1550 iSCSI-to-SCSI bridge products have successfully completed interoperability testing with EMC Retrospect for Mac OS X backup and recovery software. Retrospect itself, meanwhile, has faded in the market in recent months.
Ciprico integrates with H3C
Ciprico announced today that its RAIDCore storage software is being integrated into Hangzhou H3C Technologies' Neocean IX1000 and EX800 lines of iSCSI servers for small and midsized businesses targeted for the China market.
