Despite almost 70 years of research into digital electronic computing, there remain some tough questions. Microsoft's research laborartory in Cambridge is exploring some of the toughest: latency, energy consumption, parallel processing and high-volume information management, among others.

Here the lab's director, Andy Herbert, tells Computer Weekly senior reporter Ian Grant how close it is to a solution.
