Microsoft has backed a Canadian web portal which is dedicated to improving privacy protection for consumers.

The Privacy Network portal is being developed by Bell Security Solutions (a subsidiary of Bell Canada) and Toronto's Centre for Innovation Law and Policy, in conjunction with Microsoft Canada.

The portal will provide researchers, government officials and security industry experts portal areas to discuss new security policies and technology designed to improve data protection.

The Privacy Network portal is also intended to be a place where consumers can get general information and protection advice on growing threats such as identity theft and phishing.

Microsoft is investigating whether similar portals can be set up to serve other countries, to help them also tackle internet security issues.

The Canadian portal has been built using Microsoft's SharePoint software.
