IT complexity does not just relate to IT systems. A study of more than three million employees has discovered that there are more than 60,000 different job titles in the IT industry.
Research by Marketing Improvement (MI) analysed the job titles of staff in different business departments in the UK, US and mainland Europe.
MI discovered 141,000 unique job titles, with IT being by far the most "creative" segment, with 60,000 unique descriptions.
In the IT sector, there are 13,466 different job titles for an IT director. IT managers have 25,898 titles, there are 5,920 executive titles, and 700 assistant titles.
In addition, there are 11,979 technician titles, 2,012 consultant titles, 48 trainees and 12 unskilled or manual titles.
In other departments, MI found 2,347 ways to say finance director, but only 1,562 different ways of being a marketing director.
Some employers are attempting to simplify the way that IT jobs are categorised by using an IT skills framework, which breaks down IT roles into categories according to experience and skills.
The Skills Framework for the Information Age has been taken up by a range of employers, including Norwich Union, which has used it to identify skills gaps in its workforce.
