Sun Microsystems has launched an improved range of Java-enabled radio frequency identification (RFID) reader platforms to deliver faster processing times.

The new RFID platforms can use Java Platform Standard Edition and Java Platform Micro Edition, and allow readers and other kit to intelligently process information directly instead of relying on external middleware to do the data processing.

The new solutions support the industry-wide EPCglobal Application Level Events specifications for intelligent data processing and filtering.

Analyst Datamonitor said large companies and governments worldwide were expected to spend $6bn (£3.24bn) on RFID hardware, software and services by 2010.
