EMC tightens links to Solaris 10

Antony Savvas

EMC and Sun are collaborating on simplifying storage by offering tighter integration between EMC’s hardware and the Solaris 10 operating system.

The two companies said that when the integration initiative was complete, users would be able to manage, protect and share information using EMC storage systems and software equipped with the Solaris 10 OS, running on both Sparc and AMD Opteron x64 processor-based systems.

EMC also intends to port key storage management software to Solaris 10, including PowerPath and Legato NetWorker, as well as software from its Documentum, Legato and Smarts product families.

The two companies have also signed a co-operative support agreement which will see users get support from both companies when building storage solutions using the companies’ combined technology.

In addition, Sun will be allowed to continue reselling EMC’s Legato NetWorker as its own Sun-branded backup and recovery software solution.
