£10m for best cross-government partnership

The IT industry is joining forces with the government to sponsor a Digital Challenge that, by 2008, will provide a test-bed for best practice in e-government, according to the prime minister’s strategy unit.

The competition would make £10m available to the authority that puts together the best plans for cross-government partnership in electronic services, including health, social services, police, criminal justice and education, as well as linking with e-business services from local companies.

The challenge will be similar to the competition for the European capital of culture and will run from 2006 to 2008/2009.
Regional heats will select 12 authorities to receive a £100,000 fund to develop their bids.

A prospectus for the challenge will be launched later this spring and a steering group will recommend the winning challenge to ministers in December 2006.
