Union protestors demand Budget boost for telecoms

One of the UK's largest private sector unions, Amicus, is today holding a pre-Budget demonstration on the state of telecoms in the UK.

Members of Amicus from troubled telecoms manufacturer Marconi are taking part in the telecoms plea at the Houses of Parliament

Roger Jeary, Amicus National Secretary said: "Gordon Brown has an excellent opportunity tomorrow of giving a massive boost to Britain's telecommunications industry. What we want to see is him announcing investment in IT for schools, the NHS and the public sector in general."

Amicus is demanding action from the Chancellor to achieve the government policy of getting the UK into the top five European countries for Internet broadband access status.

Practical measures to achieve this would mean safeguarding existing jobs and creating thousands of new jobs within Britain's telecommunications industry, the union said.
