Thistle Hotels has launched a Wap service that will allow customers to get directions to hotels, check availability of accommodation and make reservations from mobile phones for any of the chain's 56 hotels.
The hotel group found that the most difficult part of the project was in deciding what content should be used. "The biggest challenge was thinking about what was pertinent," said Tor Yem, digital communications analyst for Thistle Hotels. "Wap users are different to Internet users, they want the information here and now."
He added that Wap enabling the information was not difficult, as the company's Web site had been set up to support different channels. In future, Thistle plans to allow guests to check in to their rooms using their mobile phones. It is also developing a digital TV booking service.
The service was developed by US Internet consultancy firm iXL using software from Dynamo.
