Developers face a huge challenge in finding a transparent
security system for use in cloud computing, says storage supplier
Origin Storage.
Security experts have predicted that it will take up to 10 years
for
cloud computing to achieve the security assurances that will
enable it to become the norm in business.
Vulnerabilities in password reset functions for online services
from Amazon and Microsoft have cast fresh doubt on the security of
cloud computing.
Researchers demonstrated the flaws in Amazon's Elastic Compute
Cloud and the online version of MS Office at last week's Black Hat
security conference.
"As long as user-friendliness comes ahead of security, password
resets and other security mechanisms will be the weakest links,"
said Any Cordial, managing director at
Origin.
"Even once a solution is found, it will take time to get that
technology accepted and widely used."
In the meantime, businesses can take advantage of mature
encryption technologies to secure data locally to military
standards on the fly, he said.
