Six months is too long for an IT professional to be out of
work, according to a survey of staff who are currently looking for
work.
Almost half of the 132 respondents said they had been out of
work for between six and nine months after being made redundant.
Most of these worry this is too long and could count against them
in the hunt for a job.
They predicted that IT managers and project managers are the
most likely to be made redundant at the moment, as IT departments
put large projects on hold during the recession.
But Teresa Sperti, head of international marketing at the IT Job
Board, which conducted the report, said, "On a more positive note,
these roles are more likely to be hired first when the market picks
up."
The company said
volunteering is a good way to update a CV and pick up new
skills while redundant.
Sperti said, "Across the board, companies are either going into
administration, or laying off staff. Those IT professionals who
have been made redundant need to remain positive, get networking,
and look at ways of keeping their skills-base up-to-date."
