Personal details about the UK's ambassador to the UN and
future head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, have been removed from social
networking site Facebook because of security concerns.
The move comes after the Mail on Sunday alerted the Foreign
Office that personal details about Sawers, family and friends were
accessible to 200 million Facebook users, according to the
BBC.
The paper said Lady Sawers had posted the information on
Facebook without any privacy restrictions, making the entries
accessible to all users in the open-access London network.
The information is said to have included the location of the
couple's London flat, the whereabouts of their three grown-up
children and of Sir John's parents, and details friendships with
senior diplomats.
Foreign secretary David Miliband denied claims security had been
compromised. No state secrets have been revealed, he said.
But politicians across the political spectrum have called for
reassurances and an investigation into the security implications
for MI6 as well as Sir John and his family.
Sir John is due to succeed Sir John Scarlett as head of the
Overseas Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) in November.
