Italian olive oil manufacturer Fratelli Carli has
standardised its IT infrastructure
onRed Hat Enterprise Linux
5.
The move was aimed at streamlining the processing of orders
through automatic address validation and keeping system response
times below one second through periods of peak demand.
The company said since implementing Red Hat Linux on its
IBM System z Mainframe, it had achieved increased levels of
performance by running several instances of the operating system at
the same time.
"We chose Red Had because it delivers a standard Linux product
much closer to the logic of a mainframe than other products," said
Marco Gardini, Mainframe System Architect at Fratelli Carli.
Speed in processing orders is important to Fratelli Carli, which
receives orders directly from more than 600,000 customers a year by
telephone, mail or through its website.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is used to control the company's
mainframe, its DB2/Udb database containing customer data, and Egon,
a Java-based application which ensures that customer addresses are
entered correctly.
"I am firmly convinced that Linux is the turning point for the
evolution of mainframes, which, now as in the past, continue to be
excellent systems in terms of reliability and performance," said
Gardini.
