From today (18 December 2007), council-backedConnectMKwill be providing residents and businesses in the Milton
Keynes area with access toWimaxservices.
ConnectMK joined forces with Freedom4, a joint venture between
Pipex and Intel Capital, to offer the service, which the suppliers
say is the first UK commercial wireless broadband service to use
Wimax technology.
More than 1,000 people in Milton Keynes have registered interest
in joining the Wimax network, said the partners.
With no BT line required, Wimax enables broadband to be rapidly
installed at customers' premises or homes, and offers increased
symmetrical (high sending and receiving speeds) broadband
delivery.
Wimax is ideal for remote workers and users who need higher
uplink bandwidth to send large volumes of data.
"Our aim is to make Milton Keynes the first Wimax-powered
wireless internet city," said Steven Jewell, chief executive at
ConnectMK. "As the Wimax network expands, we will have the
capability to offer the service to an increasing number of
residents and businesses, helping to make Milton Keynes a highly
connected city."
ConnectMK is a private company that has been formed by Milton
Keynes Council to drive a digital inclusion agenda, addressing the
issue of poor broadband connectivity across Milton Keynes.
