Weekly compilation of storage news:Riverbed stock slips
Riverbed reported its quarterly results this week, showing a
157% increase in sales to $63.3 million from last year and had
revenue of $2.8 million, compared to a loss of $3.1 million in the
third quarter a year ago. However, that wasn't enough to satisfy
investors. CIBC analyst Ittai Kidron sent out a note saying that
the performance wasn't "good enough" because Riverbed has a track
record of beating expectations, according to an AP report.
Following Kidron's analysis, the stock plummeted more than 25% in
one day, dropping $12.10 to $35.93. As of Friday morning it was
trading at $32.66.
Elsewhere, EMC stock hit a six-year high of $24.61 after it
reported a 74% profit for the quarter.
Riverbed also announced that that Bank of Korea has deployed its
Steelhead
WAFS appliances.
BlueArc reports overseas customers
BlueArc announced new customers in Australia and India this week.
Photon VFX, an Australian visual effects studio, has deployed a
Titan 2000 NAS system. The company purchased the Titan to store
data for its animation work on
Animalia, an upcoming
television series to air on the BBC and PBS. In a separate release,
BlueArc announced that a Mumbai, India-based visual effects studio,
Redchillies.vfx, also installed a Titan 2000 in a new
post-production facility. Finally, BlueArc and Expand Networks
separately announced a new partnership that will market BlueArc's
storage boxes with Expand's WAN optimization appliances.
University of Florida picks Xiotech
Xiotech Corp. announced that the University of Florida Jacksonville
Physicians Inc. (UFJPI) has purchased its Magnitude 3D 3000 SAN
system to store all of its data, including a new VMware deployment,
electronic medical records and scanned copies of paper financial
records. UFJPI handles support operations, patient billing and
scheduling for the University of Florida's clinics.
StoneFly adds entry-level, high availability IP SAN
products
StoneFly has launched two new IP SANs, as well as upgrades to its
existing products. The Integrated Storage Concentrator (ISC) 801 is
a new entry-level system, including setup wizards, replication and
centralized storage management, with support for eight drives and
up to 4 TB of storage. The HSC-1601 replaces the HSC-1420, and
supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GigE) and clustering. The HSC-1601
supports16 disks in capacities ranging from 150 GB to 1 TB.
StoneFly also added quad-core processors across its product line,
along with support for 1 TB drives and 10,000 rpm 150 GB SATA
drives. The ISC-801 is available now and priced starting at $13,000
for 4 TB. The HSC-1601 is available now starting at $20,000 for a
2.4 TB system.
Overland adds compression
Overland has added hardware-based compression to its new REO 9100c,
boosting its capacity up to 114 TB, over the 66 TB of raw capacity
possible before. The new system can hold up to 32 virtual tape
drives, 512 virtual cartridges and six library partitions. The
9100c now is available from Overland partners for a starting MSRP
of $63,343.
Tandberg ships VXA with Mac OS X support
Tandberg announced the availability of two new products for Mac OS
X, the VXA-320 Firewire/USB Tape Drive and the StorageLoader
VXA-320 Firewire, designed for the Mac OS X operating system, are
now available and include backup and recovery software for Mac
Xserve and Xserve RAID devices. Both products are now through the
Apple Store and Tandberg distributors. Estimated prices for the
VXA-320 FW drive and StorageLoader VXA-320 are $1,199 and $2,170
respectively.
Western Digital embeds Memeo
Consumer data management software maker Memeo's AutoBackup and
AutoSync software will be packaged in Western Digital's My Book
hard drives and Passport Portable Drives external storage devices.
The software backs up and synchronizes files. Depending on the
drive, the devices come with either a 30-day trial version of Memeo
AutoBackup (PC/Mac-compatible) and AutoSync (PC-compatible) or a
full version of Western Digital Anywhere Backup
(PC/Mac-compatible).
C2C adds SharePoint archiving
C2C announced version 3 of the architecture for its email archiving
software, Archive One, which separates application agents from the
main archiving system, allowing users to mix and match plug-in
modules for application support. Also new with this announcement is
support for SharePoint Manager; more applications are to follow,
the company says.
Pivot3 supports 1 TB drives
Pivot3, a new iSCSI startup marketing
distributed RAID, announced the availability
of release 2.2, a new version of its RAIGE storage system. The
new version will support 1 TB hard drives, increasing video
capture capacity by 60% over the previously available
configurations.
Bitmicro claims 416 GB on 2.5-inch SATA flash disk
drive
Bitmicro debuted the E-Disk Altima E2A3 SATA solid-state flash
drive. This 2.5-inch, flash-based solid-state SATA drive is capable
of storing up to 416 GB of data, the company claims and sustaining
transfer rates of up to 100 MBps. Volume shipments are expected to
begin by the second quarter of 2008.
Autonomy Zantaz imports XML standard
Zantaz, an Autonomy company, will support an XML standard developed
by the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) Program in its
email archiving system. Zantaz was also a participant in the
drafting of the standard.
Sepaton joins Green Grid
Sepaton announced it has joined The Green Grid, a consortium of IT
vendors working on lowering the consumption of power in data
centers. The Grid claims 102 members, including Hewlett-Packard
(HP), IBM, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Dell, VMware,
Microsoft and Sun.
