Mozilla'sFirefoxweb browser is gaining market share in Europe, having won more than 28% of users in the region to date, a study has revealed.

The number of users installing Firefox is growing at an average of 3.1% every four months according to web-trends monitor XiTi. More than 18% of users in the UK use Firefox, which is similar to usage in Italy (18.3%) and Norway (18.6%).

Use of Firefox was highest in Finland (45.4%), followed by Slovakia (40.4%) and Poland (39.6%), but lowest in Italy (18.3%).

Although Microsoft still has 66.5% of the browser market with Internet Explorer across Europe, in certain countries Firefox has now become very popular, especially in Eastern Europe.

" Internet Explorer is still by far the most used browser in Europe, but it is losing ground faced with the dynamism of its challenger," the report stated.

Between 2 July and 8 July in 2007, European countries using Internet Explorer was 66.5%, compared with 73.3% one year earlier, from 3 July to 9 July of 2006.
