Continuous data protection
(CDP) products track changes to files and data -- typically in real
time -- recording activity and allowing recovery to an extremely
granular level. This effectively reduces backup windows and restore
points, allowing busy transactional data centers to protect
mission-critical applications without significant downtime for
backups or restorations. In most cases, CDP is implemented as
software running on a server with internal or network storage
access. The following product snapshots highlight key
specifications for a cross-section of CDP systems/appliances
currently available. The following products were selected based on
input from industry analysts and SearchStorage editors, and vendor
specifications are current as of
October 2006.
The following specifications have been provided by vendors and
are periodically updated. Vendors are welcome to submit their
updates and new product specifications to
sbigelow@techtarget.com.

the storage being protected which gives from 1 to 3 days of on-line
recovery

NOTES:
(1) SNIA defines "true" CDP as "a methodology that continuously
captures or tracks data modifications and stores changes
independent of the primary data, enabling recovery points from any
non-predetermined point in the past. CDP systems may be block,
file, or application-based and can provide fine granularities of
restorable objects to infinitely variable recovery points". This is
different from the definition of snapshots.
