Boeing has selected Wind River’s Linux-based Platform for Networking Equipment for the mission system of its P-8A anti-submarine and reconnaissance aircraft.
The US Navy is set to purchase 108 of the new multimission maritime aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of P-3 aircraft in a $3.89bn (£2.08bn) deal.
Boeing selected Wind River’s carrier grade Linux product after an evaluation of several commercial Linux solutions, with visibility into the Linux build a key factor.
Wind River's Linux platform is based on an unmodified 2.6 kernel and is shipped with complete source code. This allows users to customise their Linux build, without losing sight of the source.
The deal also includes Wind River’s Workbench device software development suite, based on an open source Eclipse framework.
