A further 4,000 would-be volunteers from the IT sector have visited the Web site, and more than 40 charities have registered that they need volunteers with IT skills.
The initiative, led by the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, Intellect, the British Computer Society and others and supported by Computer Weekly, aims to boost the number and effectiveness of IT professional volunteers.
"About 90% of those registering are individuals, with only about 10% involved as part of a company programme," said Simon Davey, a co-ordinator of the project. He added that most respondents were well skilled, and several were also willing to do strategic work for charities.
The IT4Communities initiative is aimed at all people with professional IT skills - whether suppliers, users, small or large organisations - and at all skill levels.
Its Web site aims to provide guidance and resources and to encourage and support an online community of volunteers.
