Cisco has signed Comstor as the first distributor of its Unified Computing System (UCS), the blade server-based integrated data centre system that has put rivals in a tizzy and precipitated a strategic upheaval in the network infrastructure market.

The Westcon-owned Cisco specialist recently inked a global deal with the networking giant and executive vice president Bill Corbin claimed the addition of UCS to its portfolio was the next logical step.
Comstor is first to market with the UCS platform but will not have exclusive rights, said Corbin.
“Cisco reserves the right in future to look at existing markets and bring a competitor in," he added.
Cisco launched UCS during the spring, but as MicroScope reported, chose to wait before rolling it out to distribution, choosing to sell its high-end B-Series blades through larger system integrators as it readied the C-series for mid-market resellers.
The C-series blades will be pitched by Comstor as a more competitive SME solution, although it also has access to B-Series gear if any VARs feel like trying their hand at it.
“This will be orderable within the next month, and we have been readying our own business to be able to transact on UCS,” said Corbin.
Comstor said that 75% of its account managers are now technically trained on UCS, and pre- and post-sales certifications should be in place by December.
“This particular technology is very disruptive; it allows you to handle more virtualised servers than the competition with both CAPEX and OPEX savings combined because the price points are lower,” said Corbin.
Cisco worldwide vice president of distribution, Dave O’Callaghan, hailed Comstor’s “important role … in the successful rollout and adoption of virtualisation and data centre technologies” as Cisco’s only global distribution partner.
