Spectra Logic tape library just the ticket for car park firm

Essex-based car parking provider Empark has selected a Spectra Logic T50e tape library to upgrade storage of business-critical data.

The Stansted company has more than 3,000 employees and offices in Andorra, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the UK, managing around 400,000 parking spaces in 164 cities. It has 3TB of data it must retain and have accessible around the clock.

As part of a systems upgrade, Empark reviewed a number of options and chose Spectra Logic’s T50e LTO tape library, which has library management functionality and tape encryption.

Systems department director, Antonio Angel Ortega Fernández, said: “We wanted to improve consistency of service as the legacy storage systems we had been using were becoming unreliable and giving us continuous problems with robotic arms and other hardware.”

IT departments fail on email compliance

IT departments are struggling to cope with email archiving and retention regulations, according to a survey from email archiving provider Mimecast. The research found that email retention policies are often ad hoc and that only 27% of IT departments have an email retention policy designed for compliance with industry regulations.

e-discovery readiness also lagged; on average, it would take a UK business 12 working days to identify all emails relating to a potential litigation.

Record HDD shipment after Thai floods

The global hard disk drive (HDD) industry has fully recovered from last year’s Thai flooding disaster, with shipments expected to hit a record level this year. HDD shipments for 2012 are forecast to reach 524 million units, up 4.3% from 502.5 million units last year, according to analyst company IHS (NYSE: IHS). The 2012 number will be the highest shipment figure on record, but shipments are projected to continue to climb.

Veeam to support Hyper-V

Virtual server backup software provider Veeam has announced support for Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V in forthcoming versions of its Backup & Replication tool. General availability of Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 and Veeam ONE 6.5 are scheduled for later this year. Beta versions are available now.
