Wal-Mart is to roll out SAP to support its global expansion, improve efficiency and respond to new regulations.

Wal-Mart plans to implement SAP globally in phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2010. The company will replace some legacy systems and will integrate some other internal Wal-Mart systems.

"Technology has played a central role in the growth and success of our business," said Rollin Ford, executive vice-president and chief information officer for Wal-Mart. "We believe SAP's experience in helping global companies with their financial systems will bring more flexibility and scalability to our growing business."

Wal-Mart has pioneered the use of IT to improve its business and had mandated the use of RFID across its supply chain.
