Indian IT service provider Wipro Technologies has announced
its strategy to provide services via the cloud.
Wipro is using Oracle grid computing software to build a
software as a service (SaaS) platform known as w-SaaS. It will
enable existing and new business applications to be delivered as
services over the internet.
Indian IT service providers dominated for years by providing
highly skilled workers at a lower cost. But the arrival of IT
services via the internet means
these companies must invest in new delivery models or lose
their advantage.
Wipro is not alone in investing in new delivery models, with
other Indian firms also moving into the cloud.
India's biggest offshore IT service provider, Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS), is piloting a cloud computing service in India,
ranging from e-mail and networking to applications such as HR and
finance.
But until a major customer adopts cloud computing these
platforms will remain works in progress.
Andy Gallagher, consultant at Compass Management Consulting,
said every IT service provider has to be ready with a cloud
services platform.
"Everybody has a cloud computing strategy, but a lot of it will
just be marketing hype until a supplier signs a major cloud
computing deal with a big customer."
