Data migration product specifications
Part of the Tiered Storage Buying guide focusing on product specifications for data migration tools.
Data migration takes data from one folder, partition, disc or disc subsystem and places that data into another physical location.
In many cases, data is migrated to accommodate tiered storage or a data classification initiative. In other cases, data migration is used to move data from an old storage system to a new platform. However, migrating hundreds of gigabytes, or even terabytes, requires a highly efficient tool with the intelligence to recognise data types and follow policies that can aid in automation. There are many data migration tools to choose from, and the actual choice depends upon a careful evaluation of transparency, interoperability with storage systems and data, complexity, policy enforcement and other factors. The product snapshots in this chapter highlight key specifications for a cross section of popular data migration platforms.
The following products were selected based on input from industry analysts and SearchStorage.com editors, and specifications are current as of April 2007.
The following specifications have been provided by vendors and are periodically updated. Vendors are welcome to submit their updates and new product specifications to [email protected].

Product Snapshot #2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Product: CA; File System Manager
Storage System Support: CA File System Manager supports a wide range of file systems (Not designed for pc and workstations).
Application Support: The product is designed for file systems only, it does not include support for applications.
Migration Features: Organise data and storage resources that span multiple systems into logical groups using access frequency, file sise and type, storage cost, model, etc; drive file movement, copy, and deletion actions across multiple systems based on established classifications and policies; automatically migrate data from primary storage to secondary or tertiary storage while maintaining transparent end-user access; automate storage consolidation from initial planning to transparent migration of end user files and directories; enable administrators to simulate data management policies before actual execution in order to better understand their scope and effectiveness.
Data Cleansing Features: The product uses the native deletion process available on the supported operating system/storage platform.
Data Collection Features: Utilises an agent-less approach for data collection, which eliminates the need to install and maintain server agents. The administrator configures the software to scan each server and NAS device in the network utilising industry standard protocols (for example, CIFS, NFS). The data collection process can be manually launched by the administrator on a select group of servers or it can be done on a regularly scheduled time interval. CA File System Manager collects information on total available and used capacity by servers, by volumes, and by exports/shares, as well as at the file-level for information such as size, file type, owner, creation date, last modified date and last accessed date, path, and user group information.
Management Features: The modular design allows existing policies to be dynamically updated in the case that data and/or storage resources have changed, offering administrators the ability to manage the system more efficiently. This approach is based on the creation of logical groups that represent business value or ownership of the data. For files owned by one department, any new data matching that criteria automatically becomes a part of that group and can be operated on by a policy. Group resources are also "global" in nature, allowing data or storage from multiple servers to be logically associated.
Automation Features: The Policy Automation Engine is responsible for executing the data management actions. It is unlike any other policy based solution available today, in that it uses a patented algorithm to select files for movement based on detailed parameters such as age, size, last modified, last accessed date (among others), combined with the business valuation that the administrator specifies.
Operating System: Windows 2003, 2000, NT 4.0; Sun Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 8, 9, 10; HP-UX 11, 11i; IBM AIX 4.3.3, 5.x; Red Hat Linux; SGI IRIX; NetWare 4.x, 5.x, 6; Mac OS X; NetApp Storage Appliances; EMC Celerra, Centera; NAS devices
System Requirements: Windows Server, Dual Pentium class 1GHz or greater speed processors, 80 GB free disc space, 1GB DRAM, 10/100 Network Adapter (or better).
Implementation: Design of the architecture – based on storage platforms, network topology, target storage configuration; Installation of server hardware and CA FSM software according to architecture; Definition business goals and creation of policies that support goals; Testing of limited data – end to end and retrieval; Staged deployment of polices to accommodate network and capacity constraints.
Interoperability: NetApp Storage Appliances, EMC Celerra, EMC Centera, Hitachi HCAP
Vendor Comment: CA File System Manager integrates three key components of Intelligent Information Management into one product; agentless data collection, data classification, and data management. CA File System Manager provides the only solution that has a classification system for files on primary storage based on business value of the data, enabling customers to readily manage the hundreds of millions to a billion or more end user files, through the use of intelligent grouping and application of global policies. CA File System Manager is easy to implement because it requires no server agents and the solution stays out of the data path by design.

Product Snapshot #13
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Product: Incipient Inc.; Network Storage Platform (NSP)
Storage System Support: iNSP supports non-disruptive data migration of SAN based storage.
Application Support: iNSP is designed to support any application that is accessing data in a SAN environment. Customers implement iNSP on a wide range of applications (custom and off the shelf) and databases with no plug-in or custom integration required.
Migration Features: Application data can be migrated non-disruptively, eliminating the need for scheduled downtime and shortens the planning effort. The application server sees the same volume before and after the migration, eliminating SAN reconfiguration and host software (HBA firmware, Multipath) updates or changes. Automated, policy-based provisioning of destination volume resources which simplifies the operational challenges associated with data migration. Manage migration priority to eliminate resource contention.
Data Cleansing Features: iNSP is a network volume level data migration solution designed specifically for block-based storage. It has no visibility into host data structures like files, databases, etc. and therefore does not provide any data cleansing capabilities.
Data Collection Features: iNSP performs Deep Discovery of the underlying SAN and storage environment to facilitate intelligent resource allocation when configuring network virtual volumes, copies or migration destinations. It understands the internal configuration of the arrays being virtualised (including the LUN to disc drive mapping) as well as the logical and physical SAN configuration. This information is used to select storage resources and SAN pathing when configuring the destination location of a volume migration.
Management Features: Users can actively move application data within a fabric without disruption to applications and respective hosts accessing the data that is being moved. With iNSP, application data can be moved without halting I/O and with little to no performance degradation to the application. Network virtual volumes are created and presented to hosts for I/O, allowing storage to be provisioned to the host once and grown (increase size), transformed (change RAID Layout), migrated (change physical location), copied, replicated (to remote locations), and decommissioned without application disruption or the overhead of reconfiguring the SAN or the disruption caused by scheduled application outages. iNSP provides a centralise migration services, with common management that can be used to move data within an array or between arrays having similar or different storage characteristics (i.e. different models, vendors, etc.).
Automation Features: Deep discovery of the underlying SAN and storage environment to facilitate intelligent resource allocation when configuring virtual volumes, copies or migration destinations; automated provisioning aggregates multiple individual storage management operations into a single provisioning task. Automates the storage and SAN resource selection based on predefined policies and the deep discovery information; workflow and change management control to implement an approval process and limit when changes can be executed; migration task monitoring, completion estimate, priority control, and pause/resume to mitigate impact on production applications.
Operating System: Incipient Software is completely SAN switch resident and does not have any components that need to run on the application server Incipient NSP does support the following host operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix (AIX, HP UX, Solaris).
System Requirements: iNSP is comprised of two major software components: a switch-resident module (iNSP) and a web-based module that provides iNSP administration (iNSP Administrator).
Implementation: Incipient NSP software runs on the Cisco MDS 9000 SAN switch with the Storage Service Module installed.
Interoperability: 3PAR Inserv; Engenio; EMC Clariion and Symmetrix DMX; HDS 9900; HP EVA; IBM DS 4/6/8000; Sun STK Flexline
Vendor Comment: iNSP is the industry's first fully embedded switch-resident storage virtualisation solution with enterprise-class scalability. iNSP provides a common set of advanced storage services such as non-disruptive data migration, network volume management, and copy services. For the first time, storage administrators can build SAN storage tiers with zero planned downtime. iNSP software abstracts the SAN data path, eliminating application downtime normally associated with data migrations and device reconfigurations. iNSP also simplifies SAN storage management with a universal management interface and a policy-based automated provisioning engine in support of heterogeneous storage arrays and heterogeneous server and OS environments.
