BAA will deploy a new taxi management system to cut waiting times for passengers travelling from Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

The software provided by Steria will go live in March 2008 when the terminal opens. It aims to reduce passenger waiting times by assigning fares in real time to ensure the optimal supply of taxis to the airport at any given moment.

Taxi management agents at both the feeder park and terminal ranks can communicate requests for rides to drivers. Fixed and hand held devices monitor taxis equipped with RFID tags and identify both vehicles and drivers over a wireless network.

This also allows BAA to manage unplanned factors, such as roadworks, which may affect the speed at which taxis are despatched.
