Motorola Mobility is the latest company to have a patent complaint filed against it, following claims it has been using mobile phone components without permission.

Patent-holding company Intellectual Ventures has demanded a jury trial after Motorola Mobility failed to reach an agreement on a licence to use hardware and software in its mobile phones.

Melissa Finocchio, Intellectual Ventures's chief litigation counsel, said: "We have a responsibility to our current customers and our investors to defend our intellectual property rights against companies such as Motorola Mobility, who use them without a license. Our goal continues to be to provide companies with access to our portfolio through licensing and sales, but we will not tolerate ongoing infringement of our patents to the detriment of our current customers and our business."

The filing to the US District Court of Delaware said: "Despite Intellectual Ventures's good faith efforts to negotiate a business arrangement, Motorola Mobility has failed and refused to license Intellectual Ventures's patents on reasonable terms and continues to use those inventions without permission."

Google announced plans to buy Motorola's handset division, Motorola Mobility, in August 2011. The reported £7.65bn deal - Google's biggest ever - is expected to be sealed by the end of this year, or early 2012.

Google claimed in August 2011 that a pact between Microsoft and Apple to acquire patents threatens to drive up the cost of Android devices.
