Unisys is to introduce a server capacity option to allow companies to easily add extra processing power when needed in the future.
The capacity on demand option sees servers being sold with more processors than the customer initially pays for. If the server is needed for extra or more demanding processing tasks in the future, users pay to start using the extra on-board processors.
Under the scheme users will be able to buy servers with up to twice the number of processors they are paying for, although there will be a small additional charge for the inactive processors.
This extra charge will be taken off the price customers pay for enabling the extra on-board processors in the future.
Companies who choose the option will be able to permanently or temporarily turn on the extra processors. The temporary option will allow firms to meet the peaks and troughs of their business cycles.
The service will be offered with Unisys’ ES7000 line of servers. The likes of HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems already offer similar schemes with their servers.
