Drivers who are caught out by speed cameras in the Wiltshire and Swindon area can now check the evidence against them on a website.

Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership, which operates the cameras and issues tickets for offences, has rolled out a system provided by Northgate Information Solutions that lets drivers who receive a penalty notice to view the evidence online.

Drivers can log on using a secure personal identification number and see photographs of their vehicle, site maps and photographs and camera calibration certificates.

The website also provides a search facility to access information on all camera sites in the area covered by the partnership, which is made up of Wiltshire police, the courts service, Crown Prosecution Service, NHS, Highways Agency, Swindon borough council and Wiltshire County Council

Safety camera unit manager David Frampton said, “The introduction of this system demonstrates our policy of honesty, openness and accountability. We trust that, by providing access to this information, we can help change people’s perceptions of safety cameras. They are not a revenue-raising exercise, and are there for the safety of all road users.”
