WHSmith agrees £38m deal with BT

WHSmith has awarded BT Expedite a £38m contract to manage the IT and communications systems at its high street stores.

WHSmith has awarded BT Expedite a £38m contract to manage the IT and communications systems at its high street stores.

The seven-year deal with BT’s retail specialist covers software, hardware, peripherals, chip and Pin and store networking.

The contract also covers the management and roll-out of a new electronic point-of-sale system at the company this year.

Peter Swann, WHSmith's IT director, said, "Handing over the management of our stores IT services will allow us to improve efficiency and provide a better level of service to our customers."

Moving its store IT and communications systems to a single supplier will also allow WHSmith to simplify its management and operations costs and provide continuity of service, said Swann.

Richard Mahony, an analyst at Ovum, said, "The retail sector is developing some unique IT requirements in order to stay ahead in a competitive high street.

"Service providers that can demonstrate flexible business-oriented solutions to solve customer problems, rather than simply offering technology, will be best-placed in this growing market," he said.
