A new version of BEA's Weblogic application server that can be embedded and pre-integrated into third-party software could simplify deployment and enable users to establish an IT infrastructure based around a service-oriented architecture.

BEA Weblogic Platform ISV Edition is an integrated application platform suite that includes Weblogic Server, Portal, Integration, Workshop and JRockit tools and middleware.

Bobby Napiltonia, vice-president and general manager, worldwide channels and alliances, BEA Systems, said, "Many businesses are looking to reduce costs. A pre-packaged integrated suite takes less time to deploy."

So far, 12 software suppliers, including Veritas, Hewlett-Packard and Documentum, have said they will develop products to support the new BEA platform.

Peter Abrahams, practice leader at Bloor Research, said for smaller businesses BEA was lowering the cost and complexity of running its software. Because Weblogic is bundled as a package by the third-party supplier, which will be able to negotiate a better deal from BEA, the licensing cost should be lower, he said.
