Barclays is to take delivery of 41,700 Dell desktop and notebook PCs as part of a seven-year managed desktop outsourcing service with EDS.

The first roll-out, due to be completed in 2005, will involve installation of Dell Optiplex GX270 desktop computers and Latitude D400 and D600 notebook PCs.

There will be a further roll-out over the next four years as part of Barclay’s programme to use the same desktops across its business. The bank plans to tie the upgrade in with the release of Microsoft’s next operating system Longhorn.

Along with the desktop hardware, Barclays will be using a desktop management service from EDS.

Barclays signed the £211m desktop outsourcing deal with EDS last year. The EDS contract is part of Barclays’ business transformation project, which involves the outsourcing
