A computer error at the Department for Work and Pensions has left about 1,000 senior citizens still waiting for their winter fuel payments, two months after they should have been paid.

An error in the software handling the payment data is thought to be behind the delayed tax-free payments of £200 per household, which should have arrived by Christmas.

News of the incident coincides with a report from the National Audit Office warning that inadequate IT systems and strategy is hindering the Department for Work and Pensions, efforts to combat benefit fraud.

A spokeswoman for the department said the delay had been caused by an isolated software problem for inputting data and added that measures had been taken to ensure the problem did not happen again.

The delayed fuel payments will reach people by next Monday, she said.
