The deal means both companies will build a mobile portal platform for enterprise-class companies that wish to provide their employees', customers or partners with a single point of entry to corporate data and services.
The Mobile Portal toolkit will allow corporate developers to give the portal the same functionality now available on desktop portals, including inventory, product forecasts, a corporate directory and an employees personal benefits page.
Sun and Nextel selected Electronic Data Systems as its consultant and for system integration on the project.
Nextel was selected by Sun because of its previous integration work with deploying J2ME on all of its handsets.
Sun officials said the solution would be ready for customer pilot programmes later this year.
